History of Gemborees

The idea of holding a GEMBOREE originated from Ronnie Erasmus in 1965, at that time chairman of the Kimberley Lapidary Club, whose idea it also was to form the Federation of South African Gem and Mineralogical Societies (later changed to Federation of Southern African Gem and Mineralogical Societies (FOSAGAMS).

The Federation was founded in Kimberley at the inaugural meeting held on 3 September 1966; the first GEMBOREE then took place in Kuruman over the Easter weekend 1968.  Since then, the GEMBOREE has been an annual event in the calendar of the Gem and Mineral Club/Society fraternity in Southern Africa and has been held in various localities, as far a-field as Springbok in the West and Mbabane in the East.

Each and every GEMBOREE has been ‘n “special” one – not one being the same as any other.  But the basic objectives have never been forsaken, i.e. a social gathering of rockhounds enjoying a couple of good rockhunts and a wide variety of social events to complete the weekend.

To have attended a GEMBOREE is a privilege and countless friendships and contacts have been built up over these years.  Once you’ve been on a GEMBOREE you will always try and attend the next one, as a GEMBOREE provides a long weekend of fun activities away from your normal environment and just long enough to “recharge your batteries” to face the realities of the world on the Tuesday morning after Easter Monday.

However, let us not forget that group of people who have made all these wonderful weekends possible.  To them, we all, owe a deep debt of gratitude for putting in so many hours of hard work and spare time in order that the rest of the participants can enjoy themselves.  We trust that this tradition will be carried on for many years to come.
